VIDEO 1: IN HEALTHY EARTH, HEALTHY FOOD (26 min)

From 2008 to 2010, the project “Improvement of Food Sovereignty in the Andean zone of Ancash” was implemented in 20 communities in the districts of Carhuaz and Pamparomás, located in the Black Mountain Range of Ancash. More than 300 families installed bio gardens and were trained in healthy nutritional practices with the objectives of achieving self-sufficiency in nutritional needs, and reducing child malnutrition that affects 30% of children under 5 years of age. The mothers of the families — the principal actors in this process of change — share lessons about their experience.

The project aims to develop conditions for the full realization and expression of indigenous and marginalized people’s human, environmental, gender and cultural rights, and for building resilient and vibrant communities. The focus is on creating strategies for resilience through organic agriculture and increasing food security and sovereignty in communities in the Casma River basin in Ancash. By working with Strategic Alliance Groups (SAGs) and networks, it is possible for this project to influence government at the local, regional and national level.

Since 2008, The ‘Healthy and Sovereign Land’ project has been promoting food sovereignty for rural Andean families through capacity building in agro-ecological farming, healthy eating and farmers’ organization. The key to the project is increasing the number of men and women within the community who advocate for the proposal. In this video, participants share their experiences with the ‘Agroecological Production’ component of the Project.
